Opossum Biology: What Beaumont Homeowners Should Know

Opossums are often mistaken for large rats because of their size and pale coloring, but they aren’t rodents. The Virginia opossum is an omnivorous scavenger that eats insects, fruit, carrion, small rodents, snakes, pet food, and garbage. That diet makes suburban and semi-rural properties in Southeast Texas genuinely attractive habitat.

When cornered, an opossum may hiss and bare its teeth as a first warning. If that doesn’t work, it may go limp and feign death, the involuntary response behind the phrase “playing possum.” Neither response means the animal is aggressive by nature. Rabies is extremely rare in opossums because their comparatively low body temperature makes it difficult for the virus to survive, but they do carry fleas and ticks that can transfer to household pets, which is a real concern for Beaumont families.

A nursing female carries her young in a pouch for the first couple of months before they ride on her back as they grow. An active den with a nursing mother requires a different removal timeline than a single transient animal.

Texas Rules on Opossum Trapping & Relocation

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department classifies opossums as fur-bearing animals under the Texas Parks and Wildlife Code. A landowner or their agent may address a nuisance opossum on their own property without a hunting or trapping license. Capturing and relocating one to another location, however, generally requires department authorization and reporting, which is worth understanding before attempting a DIY solution.

Live animal trapping for nuisance wildlife is exempt from Texas Department of Agriculture structural pest control licensing, since that permitting governs pesticide application rather than trapping. The two regulatory frameworks operate separately, and a company licensed only for pest control isn’t automatically authorized to handle wildlife trapping and relocation.

Preventing Opossums from Returning After Removal

Exclusion work reduces the likelihood that another opossum finds the same entry points, but habitat conditions on the property also matter. A few practical steps help make your property less attractive:

• Secure food sources by using latching trash cans, bringing pet food indoors at night, and managing compost bins
• Seal potential den sites by closing gaps under decks, sheds, and crawl spaces, and inspecting attic vents for damage
• Trim back vegetation by keeping tree branches and shrubs away from rooflines to remove the access routes opossums use to reach upper entry points
